Description

The objective of the IGCP Project was to study the geodynamics of Tethyan domains in palaeozoic and their subsequent mesozoic and cenozoic evolution. It also aimed to elaborate on pre-Alpine-Himalayan basement complex, basinal configuration, and accretion of terrane following collision. It tried to conceptualize and understand the genesis and distribution of mineral deposits on the entire Tethyan zone from the Atlas mountains of Algeria to Himalaya and Tibet situated on the extreme eastern Asian end. The studies documented in this report have been conducted under thematic groups: terrane and accretionary models; structural maps; magnetism; ophiolitic melange, metamorphism; paleomagnetism; and mineral deposits. Various orogenic belts covered in this monograph are, from west to east: the Pyrenees, Alps, Carpathians, Calabrian-Peloritas arc, Mediterranean area, Greater Caucasus, Ural, Yunnan province of China, Tibet, Karakorum, Himalayan and adjoining Gondwanic province. The text should be suitable for scientists and students of geology, as well as those searching for economic mineral, gas and oil deposits.
