This is a Ph.D. dissertation. Each time the heart beats, it pumps the blood through about 100,000 miles of blood vessels throughout all parts of the body, supplying tissues with sufficient oxygen and nutrients for their normal functioning. Angiogenesis, the formation of the blood vessel network consisting of arteries, veins and capillaries, represents a major developmental challenge and remains important during specific physiological processes in the adult.

Additionally, deregulated angiogenesis contributes to numerous diseases, stimulating extensive research in the field of (pathological) angiogenesis and development of therapeutic strategies at a rapidly increasing pace.
