Functionalism: Utopia or the Way Forward?: The 5th International Alvar Aalto Symposium

At the gathering summarized in this volume, an eminent group of contemporary
thinkers looked at Aalto's functionalism in the spirit of a critical reappraisal of the
original functionalist concepts in order to find out whether they could provide some
solutions to the problems of our turbulent time. Though they had many different
points of view, this book shows that when fine minds look for a synthesis of the
rational and emotional, collective and individual, technical and cultural, universal
and local components of architecture the spirit of Alvar Aalto is kept alive.
