From the Preface: "Trademarks" of the Chinese collects together and introduces a number of uniquely Chinese ideas and customs which are mostly of deep significance for the traditional Chinese way of life, but are not perhaps so suitable today. Sinorama has remained loyal to giving an objective account which does not promote, but gets to roots and examines origins while avoiding ignorance and the misunderstandings that arise from anachronism. "Trademarks" would seem to be an attractive way of putting the subject for readers, but it is not here meant to imply any kind of commodification. Ultimately the fundamental significance of searching for the roots of a people must remain the clearing away of fixed views, the dispelling of stereotypes and the search for mutual understanding between all of humanity's variety of cultures.
