Mato Paha: The Story of Bear Butte, Black Hills Landmark and Indian Shrine -- Its Scenic, Historic, and Scientific Uniqueness
184 pp. Printed wrappers. Black & white photographs and illustrations. Bibliographic notes follow text. A history of Bear Butte that likely played a role in its designation as a state park in 1961 (and perhaps also the recognition of several other local landmarks). From the prefatory note: 'This volume is an offshoot from a graduate thesis, The Frontier of Bear Butte, presented to the graduate council of the University of South Dakota in 1935, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts degree. While engaged in the work of compilation, the author conceived the idea that Bear Butte should be designated a national monument. Three years after the acceptance of the thesis, he published an article describing the scenic, historic, and geological importance of Bear Butte. The article nominated Bear Butte for inclusion in the national monument series along with its Black Hills neighbors -- Mato Tepee, Jewel Cave, Mount Rushmore, and Cycad National Monument. A movement to that end was launched by the alert and enterprising citizens of Sturgis, South Dakota, near which Bear Butte is located.'Keywords: NATURAL HISTORY BEAR BUTTE SOUTH DAKOTA BLACK HILLS LANDMARK INDIAN SHRINE NATIVE AMERICANS ANTHROPOLOGY ANTHROPOLOGICAL TRIBAL PEOPLES MATO PAHA
