Although company performance and infrastructure investment is on an upward swing, customers remain prudent in selecting IT investments. Competition among vendors in the IT services market continues to escalate. Two elements were glaring in companies' March 2004 financial reports: "unprofitable" and "demand for price-reduction", raising questions about the profitability of the service provision business. "It is imperative that vendors return to profit acquisition as a business basic, and that they strengthen their ability to innovate as well as their ability to make proposals that would lead to added value. A qualitative transformation in the traditional IT service business is called for," says Masami Kashiwagi, IT service senior market analyst, IDC Japan.
