Description ▲
An account of the rise, development, eclipse, and modern revival of a national popular art together with information of interest and value to collectors, technical notes for the use of weavers, and a large collection of historic patterns. Heavily illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Index. This book is designed to give a complete picture of the American national art of hand-weaving. It gives a historical account of the origin, development, decline, and modern revival of the art. It describes the characteristic American weaves; not only the fairly familiar "four harness overshot" weave but the mysterious "double" weave and the beautiful and little known "summer and winter" method of weaving. These descriptions are illustrated by many photographs of ancient pieces of weaving and by a large number of diagrams and threading drafts. There are also suggestions by means of which collectors will be able to judge the probable age, and origin of an old piece and suggestions for beginners on the choice of a loom and detailed directions for warping and first weaving. An unusual feature of the book is the manner in which the three hundred patterns which it contains have been classified for quick reference. Such a classification had never been attempted before the publication of this title.
