Description

This book is a revised edition of the book Diet, The Way to Health, published in 1906. From the preface: "...it is but natural that we recall that period twenty-four years ago when we first entered this field of investigation and the practice which harmonizes with the laws of natural science." "Medicine, per se, has no place in the restoration of the sick except possibly in emergencies." "We use the term medicine because the treatment of disease and the prescription of drugs - medicine - are associated in the minds of the laity and the profession. In 1904, medicine or the treatment of disease by the use of drugs was, with few exceptions, the accepted means of restoring the sick to health. Even in the dominant school, serums received little consideration and every method of treatment other than that by by drugs was condemned. Now and then daring minds experimented with electricity and various other curative methods but such experimenters were looked upon as quacks and charlatans. Here and there the quesiton was being raised as to whether or not our method of selecting, preparing and combining foods might not have an important part to play in the prevention and cure of disease but the idea was generally scorned, not alone by the medical profession but by people generally, for to them anything that could be eaten was food and nothing more." 282 pages including index.
