From the author: Various statistical techniques have often been used for the analysis of employment compensation data for possible detection of gender discrimination. In this study, we investigate the potential role of mathematical programming-based classification models in the analysis of employment compensation data. A two-phase approach is proposed for the gender classification of employees when the variables measuring employee qualifications are used as attributes. Data from a highly-publicized court case of gender discrimination in employment compensation, involving a major midwestern bank, are used to illustrate the potential usefulness of the proposed procedure.
