From the supplier: USF and G Chmn Norman Blake has been able to correct most of the mistakes the company made prior to his appointment in 1990, although many of his decisions that turned USF and G into a lean and sharply focused insurer have been painful to him. USF and G was in a dire position, resulting from over diversification, when Blake became chairman. Blake rectified this situation with the sale or liquidation of 13 less profitable subsidiaries but he regrets the resultant 44% reduction in personnel. He later installed development and training programs and increased benefits for the remaining staff.
