From the supplier: Optical mark reader (OMR) and barcode technologies can simplify and automate the performance of a variety of routine educational activities. OMRs save substantial time and money by automating many school tasks, including grading and attendance tracking. OMR systems from National Computer Systems and several software products for developing, scoring and printing forms, tests, and surveys are described. Use of OMR scanners and OMR test and survey software packages by personnel at the Menominee, MI, school district, Virginia Department of Education and Amarillo College (Amarillo, TX) are discussed. Barcodes, which consist of a printed binary pattern of bars and spaces that encode specific information, offer speed, accuracy and reliability for a variety of tracking applications. There are many barcode 'symbologies' with varying numbers and widths of lines, and several barcode readers and related software packages that handle multiple symbologies are briefly described. Use of barcoding at the Provo School District (Provo, UT) and Jefferson County Public Schools (CO) is discussed.
