From the supplier: Many employers and workers' compensation insurance companies are using preferred provider organizations (PPOs) as the most cost-effective method for providing medical care for work-related injuries and illnesses. Faced with increased competition in the health care industry and a surplus of doctors, PPOs will often discount fees to insurers to maintain or increase their market share. Many states are planning, or have passed, legislation to encourage the use of PPOs.
