From the supplier: The Internet computer network, a packet switched compendium of some 730,000 academic, government, military and commercial computer users, provides interoperability by means of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). The key to obtaining information from Internet is the employment of the file transfer protocol application (ftp). Upon initiating an ftp procedure, the user can download computer programs and text files from the computer in which they reside to the host computer being utilized to negotiate the Internet. The advantages of the ftp include its ability to transfer files between disparate operating systems and its support of basic, Unix-derived file commands. Basically, there are around 49 key ftp commands that can be obtained by typing 'help' from within an ftp session, although educators can obtain information by knowing a few basic commands.
