From the supplier: The nursing program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center needed an efficient, easy and fast way to develop a detailed plan of study for each student. The solution was to appoint a committee consisting of one student advisor, a college computer specialist and a programmer to develop an advisor system. The committee decided on a two-step solution: developing a prototype and developing a complete system that handled the needs identified by the prototype. The prototype, which was developed using Oracle, had four parts: student demographic information, course description information, student planned course of study and projected course loads. Prototype testing has been completed and the second phase is now under development. The second phase continues to use Oracle and has two sections: Admissions, to handle student demographic data and Student Planning/Tracking which is used for initial student program planning, programming updating and completion information. Using a prototype enabled the faculty to clearly define needs, realize the solution would work and become comfortable with using a computerized advising system.
