From the supplier: History can be valuable when the fundamental ideas are reviewed in light of new technological advances and then using the best ideas to design new systems. American universities were the first homes of the first large-scale computers. The Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations (PLATO) was established in 1959 as the first computer-assisted instruction project. The National Science Foundation set up the Office of Computing Activities in 1967 to supply federal leadership in using computers for research and education. NSF has now established five supercomputer centers and is working on a national network. Schools in the US now have over 2 million computers and an additional 2 million in US colleges and universities. The pioneers not only questioned a number of assumptions about traditional education but also investigated a variety of computer-based environments to bring about new vistas and new ways of thinking about education. There is a need to build on the successes of the past and pass on these lessons to the education planners and designers of the future.
