From the supplier: Multimedia courseware is effective for developing literacy skills. Since 1984, IBM's Writing to Read educational software program has purportedly helped more than two million young children learn to read. A new IBM software package, Writing to Write, is designed for the next development stage, helping children organize their thoughts so that they can write. IBM's Principles of Adult Literacy System (PALS), which is based on phonetic spelling and is available for the IBM PS/2 microcomputer, helps combat adult illiteracy. About one in five adult Americans is illiterate. Over 900 PALS labs exist throughout the US to help more than 50,000 people improve their literacy. PALS are especially successful in improving the literacy of prisoners. Wisconsin is implementing the nation's first statewide PALS program for inmates in major correctional institutions following a pilot program that resulted in average increases of 2.8 grade levels after six months of PALS instruction.
