From the supplier: Contel of Texas Inc installed successful fiber-optic local area networks (LANs) in the Whitehouse Independent (Whitehouse, TX) and Glen Rose Independent (Glen Rose, TX) K-12 school districts. The company wanted to encourage its rural customers to use more of the company's high-technology communications services. The pilot Whitehouse system employs fiber-optic cable to link 92 IBM PC-compatibles, 20 Macintoshes, eight 3Com file servers, three IBM PS/2 Model 80 file servers and a IBM PS/2 Model 60 file server distributed among six schools via an 10M-bit/second Ethernet LAN through Contel's central office. The system handles all student records and scheduling, electronic mail, district financial applications and food services data. The Glen Rose system links about 250 microcomputers spread through 40 elementary, middle and high school classrooms, plus computer labs, libraries and administrative offices. What was learned in the Whitehouse trial and future plans for the Glen Rose network are discussed.
