From the supplier: Motorola CEO George Fisher believes that the key to business success is the ability to provide products customized to meet the customers' specific needs. His company, beginning with its pager division, has already adopted the concept of mass customization to increase its competitiveness. Quality is viewed in the organization as a competitive advantage and is greatly emphasized. To encourage quality manufacturing, the electronics firm has introduced the Six Sigma target which translates to 3.4 defects per one million parts. Many of its products have already reached Six Sigma, including pagers and semiconductors, but Motorola as a company has yet to meet the target. By a certain time, the firm plans to deal only with suppliers that apply to the Malcolm Baldrige Award and subscribe to its own Six Sigma quality standards.
