From the supplier: Spain's membership in the EC has generated rapid real GDP growth of above 4% for 1985-1988. However, structural deficiencies remain in Spain's economy despite the implementation of several economic reforms. Low rate of labor force participation, strict segmentation of the labor market, high wage inflation and high unemployment characterize the Spanish economy. Commitment to the economic monetary union would mean interest rate convergence with other EC countries, hence a necessity for fiscal policy more than monetary policy.
