Stone, who had his own newsletter from 1953 to 1971, was a passionate, politically engaged journalist who had many critics owing to his nonconformity and stubbornness. He had a 'superb nose for fakery,' and is best known for questioning the official version of the events in the Gulf of Tonkin long before the release of the Pentagon Papers.
