From the supplier: The University of California, like most universities, places heavy loads on its connectivity systems. With data, voice, and video, the result is often extremely busy telephone lines. The University must maintain quality, while also ensuring that the system can accommodate the increasing demand. The UC system is implementing a network upgrade first to SMDS and later to ATM technology. The statewide Intercampus Telecommunications Network (ITN), linking nine campuses, is based on T1 lines provided by MCI. The ITN handles all data traffic for intercampus videoteleconferencing, administration, and online library access. The ITN project enjoys a strategic partnership between the university and MCI. Videoconferencing will demand a higher amount of bandwidth, and an increase in the number of Internet users will also place increased demands on the system.
