From the supplier: A university's Department of Independent Study administers a large number of independent study courses. Maintaining the courses resulted in the instructional scientists leading the program spending too much time on details rather than faculty interaction. The group deployed an expert system to push down some decisions to the computer level to free up the administrators' time. The proprietary system was developed to be user friendly and flexible. It would be set up to handle all detail work, as well as non-critical decision-making. The group used Paradox for Windows 4.5 to create the knowledge-based system, drawing on the product's authoring and management capabilities as well as its database functions. The system presents a daily list of activities, generated by the computer's underlying flowchart, as well as data entered by the instructional scientists. The system also produces all necessary reports, memos and letters.
