From the supplier: The Southern Division of Bowater Inc. was faced with a considerably damaging crisis in Dec. 1990. The case involved the explosion of one of its tractor trailer rigs on the Interstate 75, which was triggered when another vehicle slammed into it and which killed 12 people. In response to the crisis, the company took several measures to control the damage. Public affairs manager Astrid Sheil acted as the sole spokesperson, thereby avoiding conflicting comments to the media. She held a conference during the first day of the crisis and conducted extensive research to better address media inquiries. A public relations firm was also hired to help Bowater South. Unfortunately, Sheil was unable to field more comments when relations of the victims filed lawsuits. The inability to inform sister companies as well as to keep the human element in addressing the crisis also made things worse. The company is still in the process of restoring its credibility.
