From the supplier: Black and white college students reacted differently to the first-time classroom reading of Herman Melville's 'Benito Cereno.' Blacks could foresee the slaves' conspiracy more than whites could, and whites were more apt to accept the narrator's racism. The instructor found it difficult to persuade the students of Melville's ironic and educative intent. Some of the black students were willing to counter the racism during the discussion, while others condemned the novella or sat in angry silence.
