From the supplier: Rebecca Harding Davis' novel about characters in an iron mill town uses a complex set of narratives that involves the reader as the frame of reference shifts from one character to another. The liberal use of the pronouns 'you' and 'us' establish proximity with the reader who is nonetheless not totally part of the story as he cannot directly participate in the action except as an eyewitness or a listener.
