From the author: A questionnaire was used to compare residents of a community with a high risk for earthquakes with those in a low risk community with regard to coping with earthquakes and knowledge of constructive responses to earthquakes. Residents of the high risk community were less likely to doubt the seriousness of earthquakes, less likely to ignore earthquakes, and more likely to agree that it is possible to prepare for earthquakes. Only a minority of the residents of either community, however, indicated knowledge of constructive responses to an earthquake. The pattern of responses in the high risk community clearly demonstrated the need for an emergency preparedness information program.
