From the supplier: Oklahoma Electric Cooperative (OEC) Inc. provides evidence to the notion that cooperatives can successfully compete with large IOUs. During the 1990s, OEC's competition with Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E) Co. has been quite intensive. The rates of OEC began to become competitive during the early part of the decade after its general manager introduced a rate decrease for commercial clients. Despite negative advertising by OG&E, the number of OEC's commercial accounts actually began to rise. The residential market was much harder to penetrate. Despite the difficulty in this area, the cooperative strives to gain new members by developing stronger relationships with the community. This meant participation in Homebuilders' Assns., area Chambers of Commerce and community activities. The experience of OEC shows that a cooperative like OEC can compete with a Goliath.
