From the supplier: Accommodation theory provides that spoken communicators adopt their speech patterns to suit the needs of the person with whom they are conversing. This theory is also applicable to written communication to examine the relation of the author with the reader of the message. A study was conducted to investigate how the preferred word choices of the author in electronic mail messages can be determined via a computer evaluation. Findings indicated that sensory predicate matching fosters rapport between the sender and the receiver of an electronic mail message that is marked by harmony and facilitates shared understandings. When individuals cannot be categorized, however, significant differences were not found in rapport when a message indicating a single primary representational system is communicated. Further research is needed.
