From the supplier: Support services for small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) have grown in abundance worldwide due to the growing interest in the development of SMEs. However, a more critical evaluation of support services has been initiated by seemingly overoptimistic projections about their effectiveness. A study of 161 SMEs in Bangladesh was undertaken to better evaluate the effectiveness of support services. By comparing the performance of assisted and non-assisted SMEs, it was revealed that the overall impact of support was relatively low but significant. However, problems were met in interpreting findings due to the complex nature of the selection procedures employed by support agencies in targeting support to SMEs.
