Many factors such a possible threat from China, Pakistani attempts to seize Jammu and Kashmir, and internal instability have contributed to its disarray. During the Cold War, India was able to forge a relationship with the Soviet Union, which limited Chinese and American influence, supported its position on the Kashmir issue, and enable it to buy sophisticated weapons.
