This IDC study examines the market for DSL and cable modem semiconductors. Despite a slowdown in new broadband subscriber adds, semiconductor vendors witnessed healthy growth in cable modem and DSL port shipments due to a strong round of replacement. Although copper broadband technology has started to reach saturation points in better-established markets, emerging countries like China and India are still showing significant upside opportunities. For DSL vendors, adoption of higher-speed ADSL2+ technology will continue to drive most carriers' new deployment, while VDSL and the upcoming VDSL2 standard will drive healthy upgrades in shorter copper loop environments.
