From the supplier: The rape scene in William Faulkner's 'Light in August' can be interpreted in terms of the socializing influence of Biblical myth in the patriarchal pro-slavery South, which contributes to racial and gender conflicts. The myth of the black male rapist was used to support white male dominance, and the roles established by this myth are literalized and used by the characters in an attempt to gain power.
