Description

"This is the third year that the Minor League Committee of the Society For American Baseball Research has produced a Minor League History Journal. This volume includes works, such as the 1903 Pacific Coast League Season and the Short Season All Time Records, which are the fruits of many years of coordinated research and the combined efforts by various committee members. Historical productions created in the true spirit of the Society. Contributions include William Akin's account of the nineteenth century, Interstate League, one of the longest lasting leagues of that era. Richard Adler's DuBois (PA) team history and George Pawlush's biography of Duke Landgraf highlight baseball in two other interstate Leagues of the early twentieth century. Baseball in the Far West during the first seasons of the twentieth century are featured in The Pacific National League by Larry Zuckerman, the 1903 Pacific Coast League by Carlos Bauer, and Borton and the Pacific Coast League Scandal by Bob Lemke. The independent 1903 Pacific Coast League records have long been in need of completion and documentation. Carlos Bauer's efforts fill an important gap is the minor league history during this period. Thorough documentation of the stadiums and parks is an important aspect of Larry Zuckerman's work. Bob Lemke examines perhaps the most famous "minor league" scandal of this century. Exceptional performances during the Junior World Series are the subject of James Holl's Columbus Redbirds and Bob Bailey's The Great Junior World Series Comeback. Baseball during the late 1940's and 1940's are highlighted in Tony Urbaniak's 1947 Aberdeen (SD) Pheasants and Ron Selter's West Texas - New Mexico League season. Don't overlook our annual departmental leaders for 1993 and Lloyd Johnson's notes from the Encyclopedia. We hope that you enjoy your encounter with baseball's rich minor league past.
