Description

Translated by Edith V. B. Matthews with an introduction by Brander Matthews. Ludovic Halévy (1834 - 1908) was a French author and playwright who collaborated with Henri Meilhac (1831-1897) and the musician Jacques Offenbach over a period of twenty years, to produce many successful and amusing works for the Paris theatres. Halévy is at his best in light sketches of Parisian life towards the end of the 19th century. Some of the essays in this volume include: The Dancing Master; Only a Waltz; The Story of a Ball Dress; The Most Beautiful Woman in Paris; The Chinese Ambassador; The Circus Charger; etc.
