From the author: Raimon Panikkar and Abhishiktananda accompanied and informed each other's encounters with India and Hinduism during a sixteen-year friendship (1957-73). Reading their respective writings through the lens of this friendship sheds light upon the dynamic interaction between theory and praxis in interreligious studies and, in particular, upon their shared use of relativity (as distinct from relativism) as an effective concept for characterizing the status of differing religious viewpoints. This essay presents the experiential ground, metaphysical foundation, and implications for dialogue of this concept and discusses objections to it that have been raised by other Christians.
