Considering the great importance attached to the play Chushingura and the historical fact on which it was founded, the vendetta of the Ako retainers, as indispensable material to students of Japanese thought and spirit, old and yet still surviving the part, it is surprising to find that only a few English books on them have appeared and those quite incomplete or misleading for the right understanding of the subject. This book is about the relationship between the play and the history of the event.
