From Introduction - In ancient times in Hawaii, as in many cultures throughout the world, the Kahuna were deeply involved in the study of the nature of mankind and the universe. Their search yielded a science of psychology and medicine that was capable of healing most ills of the people at that time.

In ancient Hawaii, mental illness was virtually unknown. The teaching of the Kahuna regarding the function of the conscious mind and the unconscious mind (the science of Laau Kahea) was so complete that western science has only recently achieved a comparable level of understanding.
