Description:
The social phobia concept has been used in psychology and psychiatry for about 15 years, but mentions of people suffering this kind of disease can be found in the literature of the past centuries, under names such as ereutophobia, social phobia, excessive or even pathological shyness. In the psychiatric department of an university hospital near Paris, we have been organising groups working on self-esteem awareness. These groups are intended for out-patients, showing relational difficulties, especially poor assertiveness skills, and also for people with self esteem problems. These groups take place after a set of individual sessions with the patient, to evaluate accurately their problems and expectations, to fill in forms and establish level of difficulty which will be used as basis, and supply information about the group dynamics. In addition to the six weekly group sessions and the review sessions one and three months later, other interviews are planned according to the patient's state. These group sessions can be used in addition to other care programs, either familial or individual. We present the group program and the way in which sessions work, by discussing the advantages and limitations of this approach.
