From the author: In the context of ensuring respect for pluralism and fostering dialogue among various faith traditions, this essay discusses three relevant concepts derived from the Qur'an: mutual knowledge; the commonality of human beings, based on righteousness; and reconciliation of hearts. These concepts, it is argued, are critical to the fashioning of a religious paradigm of reconciliation and a theology of forgiveness within the Islamic milieu, creating a shared idiom with other faith traditions, thus paving the way to better interreligious and intercultural understanding today. The essay draws upon the understandings of pre-modern and modern exegetes of key qur'anic verses that refer to reconciliation and forgiveness, in order to establish the enduring and universal relevance of these concepts.
