"The researcher cannot always be sure that the book he starts to write is the one it will be given him to finish. My original plan was to study the Negroes in the South, to get a few life histories, and to learn something about the manner in which the Negro person grows up. It was far from my wish to make a study of a community, to consider the intricate problem of the cultural heritage of the Negro, or to deal with the emotional structure of a specific small town in the deep South."
