Edmund John Millington Synge [1871–1909] was an Irish playwright, poet, and prose writer. He was a cofounder of the Abbey Theatre. He is best known for The Playboy of the Western World, and Riders to the Sea.

In 1892, Synge graduated from Trinity College, Dublin with a BA. In 1895, he studied literature and languages at the Sorbonne, Paris. In 1896, William Butler Yeats encouraged Synge to live in the Aran Islands. In 1907, he published The Aran Islands an account of life on the islands. His experiences in the Aran Islands are the basis for many of his plays. From the first, his plays were denounced by Irish nationalists, but had lasting influence on playwriters Sean O'Casey and Samuel Beckett.
