The story begins with Amelia Jones, a Detroit nurse, being set up on a blind date with a man she knows nothing about, apart from that he's named Victor Townsed. And when they meet he's perfect. He's charming. He's handsome. He's unlike guy she's ever met.

The only problem is that the man she's having dinner with is not Victor Townsed. He is not there for a blind date, and his intentions are nothing short of monsterous. In a series of lies, games, and escalating violence, our nameless narrator tells the tale of how he destroyed Amelia Jones' life, simply because he didn't like how she chewed her food.
