From the author: The paper delineates the magnitude of child labour and the distribution of child labour in India in recent years. It shows how different sources of data give different estimates of child labour in India. The trend of the 1991 Census estimates with the 2001 Census estimates reveals that the ratio of child labour has declined over the decade but the absolute number has gone up. It also shows that the ratios of child labour have increased for all the 5-9 age group, urban females and of urban persons in the age group 5-14 years. On the other hand, the estimates by NSSO for 1999-2000 reveal that the magnitude of child labour has reduced for all the categories as compared to 1993-94. The estimates for the 61st round (2004-05) show a further decline in child labour for all categories except urban females. Based on NSSO estimates for the 55th and 61st rounds, the paper has also tried to analyze the distribution of child labour on the basis of activity status, industrial classification, social groups, and literacy.
