This IDC Government Insights report looks at how the State of Missouri's Department of Conservation made significant changes to the way it manages its inventory of personal computers. The Missouri Department of Conservation found a creative way to trim PC life-cycle management costs and improve services to end users without taking too great of a risk to its overall business process. In the process, it outsourced several PC management tasks, including disk imaging, to the manufacturer of those PCs, eliminating nearly a full-staff position and also freeing up other staffers to focus on other computer management tasks.
"PC manufacturers are now finding creative ways to help with government PC management tasks, and the savings can be significant, with minimal risk," said Shawn P. McCarthy, research director for IDC Government Insights. "It's a surprising way of streamlining several PC management tasks. This report examines several aspects of this new approach and rates the things that work the best."
