Description

This book recounts the saga of Evandro, a Brazilian student who took part in the guerrilla fight against the dictatorship that ruled his country from 1964 to 1985. Wanted by repressive forces, he was exiled, initially in Chile during the socialist government of Salvador Allende (1970-1973). After Pinochet´s coup d’ état, he and hundreds of guerrillas went to Panama, then under the leftist dictatorship of General Torrijos. Under pressure from the US government, Panama forced all the exiled residents to leave the country. Evandro and his wife were forced into exile in The German Democratic Republic, where they lived for three years. Eventually, they returned to Central America, where they settled in Costa Rica. The political regimes and life styles of the countries they lived in are freely described without censorship or restraint. Although the author talks about serious events, the tone is lighthearted and often humorous, being totally free of any political bias. The author feels no remorse of the past and prefers to look at the future with the same optimism and utopia which made him fight against injustices of times gone by. This book is a different approach on the theme.
