An epic, globe-spanning novel of high adventure and romance during the first days of World War II.
Just days before the attack upon Pearl Harbor, an attractive but bookish college professor Jessica McCann is asked by the State Department to travel via a Pan-Am clipper flying boat to Hawaii to meet with a Japanese friend who is en route to Hawaii from China with information about secret deals between a powerful American industrialist and Nazi Germany. But, nothing goes as planned, and Jessica and a married State Department official Glen Voss find themselves stranded at the far side of the Pacific when war with Japan erupts.
In New Zealand, bound together by their predicament, Jessica and Voss become intimate. But, then the situation changes dramatically. The information that was thought lost is found, and it is more important than ever as political forces in America call for an alliance with Germany in order to fight the race war they want with Japan. However, there's no way to transport the critical information back across the Pacific. The only option seems to be to return home the opposite way - traveling east, around the world - as passengers aboard the same gigantic Clipper flying boat on which their journey began. But, that adds additional complications: Jessica is attracted to the handsome Clipper pilot, and there are disagreements about whether or not such a journey is even possible. The Japanese are advancing rapidly across their path and, although they don't know it, a German officer has plans to stop them even if they manage to avoid the Japanese.
