Description

THERE IS ONLY ONE BERKELEY

This unconventional town, nestled between rolling hills and the San Francisco Bay, is home to a prestigious university, eclectic architecture, intriguing public art, and colorful street vendors.

The oldest and arguably the most prestigious school in the University of California system is UC Berkeley, or “Cal,” as it is affectionately known by students and alumni. Berkeley, the city, grew up around Berkeley, the university, beginning in the mid-19th century. University and city endured Vietnam anti-war protests and brutal police confrontations, but turned out for the better with the founding of People’s Park. Fashion and social movements also have their birthplace at Berkeley. In national studies conducted for decades, the students and residents of Berkeley consistently measure as the most politically liberal people in the nation.

AUTHOR - Brad Olsen is a Contributing Editor for World Explorer magazine and has written several guide books. His seventh, “Sacred Places Europe: 108 Destinations,” was released in March, 2007. The second edition of "Sacred Places North America: 108 Destinations" was released in 2008 and won the "Best Travel Guide for Planet Earth" Award in 2010. Brad's commentaries have appeared on National Public Radio, CNN and the Travel Channel. He enjoys extended global travel (particularly to exotic locations), and public speaking on the subject of sacred places.
