Description ▲
The Library of Russian Classics- The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a harrowing tale which describes, with compelling and sometimes grim realism, the decline and death of a legal official who has reached a high position as a public prosecutor. He is an ordinary, mediocre man, a typical member of the professional bourgeoisie, a complete conformist lacking any mark of real individuality. An ambitious careerist, concerned only with money and position, he climbs the ladder of success and desires nothing more than a quiet, comfortable life regulated by convention and propriety. Ivan Illyich is at the peak of his career when he is struck down by illness following a trivial injury in his new home. After some time he realizes that he is dying of an incurable disease.
Text is in Russian. It is edited with an introduction, notes and vocabulary by Michael Beresford, Lecturer in Russian, University of Manchester.
