Summary
Power Line Communication (PLC), also known as Broadband over Power Line (BPL) is a technology that allows voice and Internet data to be transmitted over utility power lines. It was thought that BPL could be a good medium for providing broadband internet access to remote areas, but BPL lost market to other technologies like DSL and Cable due to issues such as radio frequency interference, high attenuation, noise interference and data security concerns. In recent years, technological development has helped overcome most of these obstacles. There has been a surge in interest in BPL technology recently as the Smart Grid industry looks for reliable and cheap communication options. The formulation of BPL standards is expected to further increase the interoperability and robustness of the BPL communication system.
