From the Forward: More than 125 years ago--before the Civil War--Henry Wadswroth Longfellow brought to the attention of the world some of the beautiful stories and legends of Native Americans in his epic poem The Song of Hiawatha. Despite the poem's immense popularity and the widespread controversy it created, the culture and legends of these people have not received the attention and study they deserve.
